Freedom is your birthright.  It is everyone’s birthright.  It is ours by our very existence.  It can be taken away but it is never given; since it is ours as individual creatures since life began.

It is the year 2007; there are space craft on the surface of Mars, mass communication is connecting the world like never before and science is pulling back the curtains of ignorance to reveal the most fundamental aspects of reality.  And billions of poor souls – according to Freedom House over 50% of the world’s population - live under oppression, under tyranny, without the freedom to live their lives as they desire.  It is past time for us to raise our voices and to help free those who are entrapped by tyrants, dictators, and other non-elected pirates who use their control of government guns to subjugate the citizens.  Poor souls whose only crime was to be born in the wrong country

A sea change is happening around the world and it needs our support.  At minimum we can help support those seeking freedom wherever we find them.  Not with guns but with our voices, with our conscious support and with how we spend our money. 

There are two possible ways that we, Homo sapiens, came into being.  We are either the result of the Hand of God or the Hand of Evolution.  You can believe either and you’ll still arrive at the same point regarding freedom.

Each and every one of us is part of an unbroken string of life around 4 billion years old.  Each and every one of us is a continuation of this first life that somehow appeared on this planet.  Each and every one of our lives is a profound gift - it is our gift, no one else’s.  Regardless on their power, no one has a claim on any one’s life but their own.  I don’t state this as an opinion, but rather as fact.

Our Declaration of Independence states: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…”  The founders were right.  These are yours and mine by our very existence.  They can be taken away, but they have already been granted from the moment of your birth.

Although it is not generally framed in these terms, we have had these basic freedoms since the first appearance of life on the planet.  All life has freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of private property (as long as you can keep it) and most importantly freedom of self – the most profound private property that exists.  Humans are no different.  Only in the most recent of times, a mere millisecond on the cosmic clock, has it been considered acceptable or normal for a small band of individuals to subjugate the freedoms of the many by using the power of the guns of this abstraction called the state.

Support freedom for whatever reason you chose.  Raise your voice and support freedom for altruistic reasons; these people truly are our brothers and sisters.  Support freedom for your self-interest; free people don’t start wars and don’t tax themselves to develop weapons of mass destruction.  Support freedom for your pocket book; a free world would set off an economic boom that will last hundreds of years.  Support freedom for population control; free people’s populations are the only ones that stabilize.  Support freedom for immigration control; free people don’t invade your country while running from theirs.  Support freedom for women’s rights; free people can not and will not subjugate 50% of their population and of course free women will not allow this to occur.  Support freedom for gay rights; free people are much more likely to allow all to live their lives as they see fit.  Support freedom for minority rights: free people are less likely to abuse and discriminate against those different from themselves.  Support freedom for all life; free people protect the life around them.  Support freedom for the planet; a free and prosperous world can develop the knowledge and technology to help us navigate the future that awaits.

A 4 billion year-old unbroken chain of life.  Do you want to protect it?  Ensure that it continues on another day?  Ensure that we don’t waste this incredible and unspeakably profound gift?   Then don’t just sit on the sidelines, raise your voice to support freedom.
